The ՈՒրարտու (Urartu ) Scholarship

Named after ethnic Armenian ceramist and sculptor, Aytsemnik Urartu this scholarship is an opportunity for makers or educators who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) as well as those who identify as Latino and SWANA (South West Asian and North African) to attend our Chiapas research and development trip in Mexico at a subsidised rate. Aytsemnik Urartu (née Ter-Khachatryan) was born on September 15, 1899 in Kars, Russian Empire (present-day Turkey) and is considered to be Soviet Armenia’s first professional female sculptor. This scholarship is dedicated to Urartu´s memory as an artist who worked tirelessly to research and reclaim her ancestry through creative practice. This scholarship covers 50% of the total cost of a place on our Supported Research and Development trip to Chiapas (Wednesday February 8th - Monday February 13th 2023)

This opportunity is available to those who can demonstrate that their primary activity and income is derived from artistic practice and/or education and whose work has a strong interest or relationship to ancestral clay practice. Our Chiapas trip is particularly relevant as we explore many of the techniques used in ancient pottery.

Those selected to participant in our Research and Development trips are offered the unique opportunity to connect with ancestral artisans and their families through the close relationships that we have spent years developing through mutual trust, honesty and integrity.

Participants will get a rare insight into their living and working practices and see how they manage their practices and studios,  continuing the tradition of working with ancestral pottery whilst also navigating economic pressures and existing in contemporary society.

This opportunity is designed to support those who:

1. Are committed to researching, preserving and recovering the artistic culture of their ancestral homelands.

2. Are seeking to build global creative networks to develop opportunities for themselves and their communities to achieve economic sustainability for their practice.

3. Are looking to develop new ways of working and thinking which will support the greater collective.

Scholarship recipients will be responsible for covering 50% of the total cost of the trip (€845) as well as their own travel fares, for through personal funds or additional grants. We are happy to provide letters of support for applications.
